Example 'BDO' Concept and Overall Mission for the Day:
Your team has been hired by a large, international hotel chain to implement several important projects in the small island nation of Melanesia. As it is a small, developing country, a number of difficulties will pose problems for your team as you try to complete each task. Limited infrastructure, political instability and transportation problems are just some of the challenges that you will face while trying to complete the job for this very important client!
Select your 6 'BDO' activities from the following:
Navigation Task (Meet The Client): Each team will need to work together to navigate to the first meeting with the client. This mission is time-critical; the team must plan a route to the meeting point and get there together, on time and with all of their equipment. Note: The navigation task is ongoing throughout the day as each team will need to work together to get from one task to the next
Top Secret RV (Blind Trail): At the first meeting with the client he informs you that their new hotel development is in a top-secret location. To keep the location secret you will all be blindfolded while travelling there. Each team will navigate a blind trail of approx. 350 meters through the bush, over and under logs and other obstacles to the new site. If and when required one trusted team member will be unmasked to become the eyes of the team.
The Minefield: Due to fierce competition in the Melanesian hotel industry one of your client’s competitors has attempted to sabotage the project. As the teams approach the secret hotel site they find themselves in a minefield! The minefield is a 6x6 grid that requires negotiation as a team. They must select the correct pathway through the grid without stepping on the hidden mines. Incorrect movement will result in the team being allocated reward challenges that need to be completed prior to continuing through the grid minefield. Negotiating the minefield successfully will require mental effort, concentration and teamwork.
Lost Communications (Obstacle/Commando Course): After navigating the minefield the teams reach a new challenge – restoring the resort’s communications link that has been severed through severe storms. Each team will need to feed their cable through a range of obstacles in order to restore communications. Team members will need to crawl, tunnel, scale, swing and squeeze to achieve this task! This scenario is designed to test spatial awareness and quick decision making while enhancing teamwork, communication and individual determination. A good sense of humour is also important.
Hearts and Minds (Typhoon): As the team finally approaches the resort it becomes apparent that something has gone terribly wrong. A cyclone has swept through the resort area leaving destruction in its path. The hotel manager and management staff need your urgent assistance in constructing temporary shelters large enough to accommodate the island’s workers. The priority is building shelter for the Elder, his wife and children, but other people will need your help too. You only have limited time to help them as best you can.
Bad Ground (Human Shuffle): Aligned to contaminated ground the team must travel an identified path whilst remaining of the ground and moving as one unit. Your team must move with haste using the balance boards and supports provided. Team members must complete this tasking in order to successfully move onto the next allocated mission. Working together as one team will be the only game plan you have.
Sewer Rats (Tunnelling): Your team’s path is blocked and no longer passable. The only safe way forward is movement underground. Negotiating the ‘Tunnel System’ the team will require effective communication (listening and speaking), confidence and teamwork. Once at the safe exit point, the team must exit from the network and commence the next allocated task.
Political Reuniting (Wet and Wild Raft Building): The scenario is related to the Republic of Gilwell experiencing civil unrest to the point where the most trusted and respected politicians have been abducted to a small island. The mission set is for the participants to construct a raft, using allocated resources, launching the craft and recovering the politicians. Point to note is that the politicians cannot swim and may be fearful of the craft. They cannot get wet!
